Polish Genitive Case: When to Use It + 50 Examples

When to Use the Genitive
The Genitive shows up in 6 main situations. Learn the trigger words — they're your cheat codes.
1. After Prepositions: do, z, bez, dla, od, obok, koło
Idę do sklepu. — I'm going to the shop.
Jestem z Polski. — I'm from Poland.
Kawa bez mleka. — Coffee without milk.
To jest dla ciebie. — This is for you.
List od mamy. — A letter from mom.
Mieszkam obok parku. — I live next to the park.
2. After "nie ma" (there isn't / there aren't)
Nie ma czasu. — There's no time.
Nie ma mleka. — There's no milk.
Nie ma problemu. — No problem.
Nie ma go w domu. — He's not home.
3. After Negated Verbs
When you negate a verb that normally takes Accusative, the object switches to Genitive.
Mam samochód. → Nie mam samochodu.
Lubię kawę. → Nie lubię kawy.
Widzę psa. → Nie widzę psa. (animate masculine — same form!)
4. After Numbers 5 and Above
Pięć kotów. — Five cats.
Dziesięć minut. — Ten minutes.
Dwadzieścia złotych. — Twenty zloty.
Remember: 2-4 use Nominative plural. 5+ use Genitive plural.
5. Showing Possession
Samochód taty. — Dad's car.
Drzwi domu. — The door of the house.
Koniec filmu. — The end of the movie.
6. After Quantity Words
Dużo czasu. — A lot of time.
Mało pieniędzy. — Little money.
Trochę wody. — A bit of water.
Kilka osób. — A few people.
How Nouns Change in Genitive
Masculine
sklep → sklepu
dom → domu
pies → psa
brat → brata
Most masculine nouns add -u or -a. Animate nouns (people, animals) usually take -a.
Feminine
kawa → kawy
Polska → Polski
mama → mamy
noc → nocy
Feminine nouns ending in -a change to -y or -i (after k, g, soft consonants).
Neuter
mleko → mleka
piwo → piwa
dziecko → dziecka
Neuter nouns: -o/-e → -a.
